In college my roommate and I took to calling this creature Mister Skitters. The name has stuck for YEARS and has been shared with countless housemates since. When I see one, I quietly ask him not to crawl in my mouth while I'm sleeping.

That's a perfectly reasonable request. I always scoop them out of the tub before I shower because I'd really rather not a) drown them {which is probably impossible} or b) have them escape from the tub by climbing up my nekkid body.

I'd never seen these before I moved to Rhode Island. Didn't see 'em in Kansas City, didn't see 'em in Boston or Florida, but we had them in Providence and now we have them in Newport. So in our household, we call them "Rhode Island bugs." I'm pretty stalwart about insects, but there is something innately creepy about these guys, especially when they get so darn BIG. I learned that they feed upon other insects, though, so I try not to mind them too much.
This blog is amazing. I am totally in love with it now.

I didn't know what they were either, and the first search I ran for "lots of legs inside bug", the correct bug popped right up. Honestly, palmetto bugs are way less creepy looking, but these don't fly at my head {unless they fall from the ceiling fan.}
And thanks, the blog thinks you are swell too.

I am so creeped out by these things it's difficult for me to even comment! Saw them too regularly when I lived in Boston, MA. How the heck did one get on your ceiling fan?! UGH.

What about the GIANT spider in the shower with you that one time? Sounded like you were being murdered!

Spiders are arachnids, not insects or bugs. Spiders are a whole 'nuther post.

I mistakenly thought they were silverfish when I lived in a basement apartment in upstate New York as a kid, and was worried they'd eat all the glue in my books and ruin them, so we rigged elaborate traps for them.
I didn't see them again until I moved to DC, where I again live in a basement and they occasionally pop up. However, since I learned they eat other insects and I'd much rather them go after some of the upstairs people's roaches, I try not to freak out too much when they appear. They do give me a willies, though.
