That is totally the best spot on the bus. You can beat a quick retreat with bags of groceries or screaming child and still maintain that feeling of invisibility when you're embarrassed.
Unless you aren't sure of the bus stops around your destination. Then you want to be up by that weird box and hope that there is no reason for you to give up your seat.
